Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is well connected to the major cities of the country by air. Frequent flights ply from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. You can get buses and cabs to Haridwar at frequent intervals.

By Rail
Haridwar Railway station is the most convenient stop, from where frequent buses and cabs are available.

By Road

Deoriatal Chandrashila Itinerary

  1. Day 1 : Drive from Haridwar to Sari (10 hours)

    On the way to Sari from Haridwar, you can cherish Rishikesh and Devprayag, if you have the time. Your drive to the trek destination will take around eight to ten hours including a comfortably timed break for breakfast and lunch. We will arrange a pick up for you from the Haridwar Railway station early in the morning that shall take you to Sari. The distance of the whole journey from Haridwar to Sari is around 214 Kms journey and it will take approximately 8-10 hours to reach Sari via road. The 8-10 hours journey from Haridwar to Sari will be exhausting but throughout the trail, you will never run out of alluring views, so don’t sleep as you might miss out on a view that you will cherish forever. We will come across many confluences of rivers and spectacular landscapes all along the drive from Haridwar to Sari.

    We will cross a lot of places on our drive from Haridwar to Sari. We will break this journey into 4 parts. The first one is a drive from Haridwar to Rishikesh which is around 24 kilometres. Rishikesh is called the adventure capital of India. It is famous for river rafting and you can get glimpses of rafts flowing swiftly over the gushing water through an undulated terrain. From Rishikesh, we will drive to Devprayag which has a distance of 74 kilometres and it will consume around 150 minutes to reach Devprayag. You will find the confluence of the two purest rivers namely Bhagirathi and Alaknanda. The water is crystal clear and is decorated by a light blue texture. From Devprayag, we will make our journey to Srinagar which is around 40 kilometres. A 3 hours drive will take us to Sari which is around 33 kilometres from Srinagar. The mobile network will be available throughout the journey from Haridwar to Sari.

    Once we reach Sari, it will mark the end of day 1 on this trek to Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek. We will take a rest and stay overnight. Dinner will be served at night and in order to have an ample amount of rest, we will suggest you sleep early.

  2. Day 2 : Trek from Sari to Deoriatal (3 kms)

    The next step on the way to Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek is 3 kilometres from Sari to Deoriatal. Deoriatal is situated at an altitude of 7,800 feet and it takes around 3 hours to reach here from Sankri. The trail passes through dense rhododendron forests, maple trees, few streams and finally, opens out to beautiful meadows. Although the journey starts from Haridwar, the actual trek commences from Sankri village. After having an early start to the day with a healthy and delicious breakfast, you will commence your trek towards Deoriatal.

    After having breakfast, the amazing trek will begin and will be around 3 km long. You can have a small sightseeing tour around the campsite if you wish. Once you start your trek, you can see the reflection of amazing surroundings in the crystal clear lake. Therefore it is often called as ‘two worlds at one place’. Your trek to Deoriatal will be lined by the holy rivers Ganga and Alaknanda.

    The trail is considered to be easy with a combination of ascent and descent. A well-organised trail of rocks will open you to the elegant view of the Chandrashila summit. From here, the Tungnath temple looks like a speck of colour. There are almost no water sources throughout the 3 km walk. So, make sure you have enough reserve water in your bottles to meet the water demand of your body. This place is considered to be a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. The chirping of the birds and blossoming of the flora will take you on a journey that you never thought existed while living your rich city life. A warm and delicious lunch will be served when we shall reach the Deoriatal campsite by the lake.

  3. Day 3 : Trek from Deoriatal to Chopta (15kms)

    We will be trekking to Chopta Rohini Bugyal on the third day. This trek is about 15 Kms and takes approximately 7-8 hours. Some local birds and deer might be seen during this trek along with majestic ice-capped mountains.

    The trail is filled with small shrines that show up in the greenery of the yellow and red flags tied on it. Thereafter, we have to pass a clearing in the forest that is aligned with the scarlets blossoming out in the open. After this, we will be directly ascending the path that leads to Rohini Bugyal and Chopta. The ascent makes way for a level of land and some hard uphill hike. From here, you can get an elegant view of the Chandrashila peak on the other end of the forest cavity. Once you cross the level land, you will again be introduced to the forest-lined up with old oak and maple trees along with the rhododendrons. This region is actually a part of the Kedarnath sanctuary and if you are lucky enough, you can witness the red fox and other wildlings. Another 25 minutes of hiking will take us to Bhadawal Temple after which the descending meadows open up to Rohini Bugyal.

    As you move along, you will find a stream where you can replenish your water needs. A little trek upwards where the meadows seem to start will open up to a bunch of huts. Here, you can find the local shepherds with their sheep. A little ahead, we will reach our campsite at the Chopta village. Once we reach the campsite we will stay overnight at Chopta. Dinner will be served at the campsite. Tents will be pitched and fun activities will be organised.

  4. Day 4 : Trek from Chopta to Tunganath to Chandrashilla peak & back to Chopta

    We will trek from Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashilla peak on this day. This trek will be 8 Kms and usually takes 6-7 hours. Enjoy the mountain vegetation and trees en route. Overnight stay will be at Chopta.

    We shall start our day as early as possible. After a delicious breakfast, we will set out on the journey to Chandrashila top from Chopta. We can witness the beautiful sunrise from the Tungnath top. The trail from Chopta to the Tungnath Temple runs on a well-defined concrete bounded path. The trail will be a little tougher today with challenging steep climbs. During winter, you will find a thick layer of snow covering the whole trail. There are no water points throughout the trail. So, make sure you carry a sufficient amount of water with yourself. After crossing the steep slope, you will reach the summit of Chandrashila peak. Here, you can get a 360-degree view of the Kumaon and Garhwal mountain ranges with snow-clad mountains in the entire vicinity. The renowned peaks consist of – Nanda Devi, Kedar Dome, Trishul, Dronagiri and Nanda Ghunti. You can also witness the glimpses of Gangotri and Thalay Sagar right at the edge

    You will feel like you are in heaven being surrounded by these many mountain peaks in the vicinity. We will spend some time embracing the beauty of the setting and glorifying the magnificence of nature. After this, we will make our way back to the Chopta base camp and this will mark the end of the longest and the most hectic day of our trek. So, we will have dinner at the campsite and proceed to sleep as soon as possible without incorporating any further delay.

  5. Day 5 : Departure from Chopta to Haridwar/Rishikesh by taxi

    After breakfast, all you have to do is drive to Haridwar. You will reach Haridwar/Rishikesh by evening. This will be the last day of the trek on which we will drive you from Sari to Haridwar. The distance of the whole journey from Sari to Haridwar is around 190 km and it will take approximately 8 hours to reach Sari via road. The 8 hours of journey from Haridwar to Sari will be exhausting but throughout the trail, you will never run out of alluring views. We will come across many confluences of rivers and spectacular landscapes all along the drive back from Sari to Haridwar. We will follow the same route as we followed to reach Sari. We will pass Srinagar, Devprayag, Rishikesh and finally reach Haridwar in the evening. If we can reach on time, you can enjoy the evening Ganga Arti at Har ki Pauri. 11. Will backpacks, raincoats and other equipment be available for rent?

Deoriatal Chandrashila is a long 5-day trek and hence Backpacks, shoes and other types of equipment are necessary. Backpacks and raincoats including other items will not be available for rent by us. These are the things you need to bring on your own. You can check our website to make sure that you know about all the things that you need to carry by yourself on this trek. It is advised to carry all those things for your own convenience. The only accessories that we will provide on rent for this trek are trek poles and ponchos. All the other necessary items or equipment are not available for rent by our side.


12. Is this a good trek for a first timer?

Deoriatal Chandrashila The level of this trek is easy to moderate, which physical fitness, stamina, and endurance. No prior trekking experience is required which means beginners are always welcomed. The duration of the trek is 5 days and the total distance of the trail is 30 kilometres. It might get a bit difficult during the winter when the snow starts to play its part but if you are mentally strong it won’t affect you. This is of the best and safest trek for the first-timers who have no prior experience of trekking a summit. You can book a seat for this trek without worrying.

14. What are the washroom/toilet facilities like on the trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek with Trekmunk provides you with washroom/toilet facilities. So, what we do for the washroom/toilet facilities on the trek is that a toilet tent is put a little far away from the campsite. The toilet tent has a hole dug right into the earth. You do your business and then cover it with dirt. We can assure you that it won’t be a problem.


15. What are the interesting places to visit if I have time before or after the trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek starts at Haridwar. We will pick you up at the Haridwar station at 6 o\'clock in the morning and drop you back to Haridwar, the next evening. So, if you want to go sightseeing in Haridwar, you have to either go before or after the trek. The interesting places in and around Haridwar include evening aarti at Ganga Ghat, Har ki Pauri, Chandi Devi Temple, Mansa Devi Temple, Chilla Range and many more. You can also visit Rudraprayag and Rishikesh which is on our way to Kuari Pass. If you arrive a day earlier or plan to depart a day later, you can enjoy rafting in Rishikesh. All these places are amazing and if you have an extra day, we suggest you go out and explore the beauty of Uttarakhand. The scenic beauty and impeccable natural landscapes are something to look out for.


16. How to get safe drinking water on the trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Pass has a trail passing through a lot of villages and streams. Water points are available at different intervals of the day to day trail. The water that we take from streams is safe and uncontaminated. But still, if you want it to be 100 percent pure, you can carry chlorine tablets with yourself. You can get it easily at any kind of medicine store.


17. Which type of shoes should I buy for this trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila has a long trek lasting for 5 long days. During the whole trail of the trek, we are ought to encounter many kinds of water bodies that we will have to cross. Moreover, during winter, the whole region will be covered with snow. So, it is very important to wear a high ankle trekking shoe that is waterproof. Normal shoes are not suitable for this type of Himalayan trek.


18. Is the trekking pole necessary?

It is not mandatory to carry trekking poles with yourself. But we strongly advise you to carry one. Without a trekking pole, it is almost impossible to go on a trek. They help in providing balance when we pass through streams. They reduce the stress on our knees while carrying a heavy load on our shoulders. 22. When it gets really cold can I consume alcohol?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek with Trekmunk is strictly against the consumption of alcohol. At such a high altitude, it\'s amazing to dance on \"daaru desi\" song but very harmful to consume the \"desi daaru\". Alcohol acts as a depressant and can reduce the frequency of breathing and even cause dehydration. Consumption of alcohol can help in the development of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) which can prove to be fatal at times and can cause an adverse effect on your body. It is very important to be fit and active both physically and mentally in order to complete this trek successfully.


23. What kind of Tents and Sleeping bags are provided to us on the trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek with Trekmunk has well defined tents and sleeping bags that are used at the campsite. Currently, talking about the tents, we are using 3 men coleman, husky and vango tents which are 5000 mm waterproof. When it comes to sleeping bags, we have custom A shape Columbia sleeping bags especially made for expeditions. It can withstand up to a maximum of minus 20 degrees centigrade. We never compromise on the quality of all items that we provide for treks. The tent and sleeping bags are of impeccable quality and you can blindly trust on us on all the equipment that we provide on the trek. All you need to do is just enjoy the beautiful landscapes, leaving everything else on us.


24. Can I leave travelling clothes in basecamp behind and collect them after the trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek with Trekmunk has well-defined cloakrooms and campsites. You can leave your travelling clothes in the basecamp and then collect them later after the trek is over. We have cloakroom facilities available for all the travellers.


25. Do I have to carry any documents with me?

Deoriatal Chandrashila trek demands some documents that will be necessary for the trek. You need to have a set of documents along with you on this trek. The forest department has made it compulsory to showcase the identity proof and other documents in order to proceed for the trek. There is a list of documents that you need to carry along with you. It’s compulsory for you to carry your identity card that has your photo attached to it. Along with the identity card, you need to have a Medical Certificate, Mischief Managed, Disclaimer and Personal Information about yourself. All the documents must be present with you on this trek without fail.


26. Would we be able to expect rain during the trek to this trek? What will we do if it rains?

Deoriatal Chandrashila trek has the most rain from July to September. Rain is a law of nature and we can go against the laws of nature. We can’t stop it, right? So yeah, we need to be prepared for the worst scenario and carry all the necessary things that are required irrespective of whether it is going to rain or not. Rain depends on the weather. If you opt for this trek during the rainy season, you can obviously expect rain. If the rainfall is light and there is only drizzle, we will continue. But if the rainfall is too heavy, we will have to stop. We will have raincoats with us. So, there is nothing to worry about the rain.


27. Is there a doctor going with us on the trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek with Trekmunk doesn’t have a doctor along with us on the trek. But our trek leaders are very experienced and they have knowledge about all the necessary things that need to be taken care of during a trek. Our trek leaders have enough medical knowledge and experience to handle any kind of medical emergencies that can happen on a trek. There’s another plus point of having oxygen cylinders along with us and your oxygen level will be checked daily. This will make sure whether you are fine enough to proceed for the further trek or not.


28. Do we get mobile network on the trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila trail has very less network connectivity. You won’t get mobile network throughout the trek. Generally, after departing from Dehradun, the mobile network starts to get weaker. You will get good mobile network until Sari village except for the BSNL network. As you pass the Sari village, it will tend to get weaker and weaker and then a few kilometres ahead you will find your smartphone with no network at all.


29. Are smoking and drinking allowed on this trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila trek comes under High Himalayan trek. Smoking and drinking are strictly not allowed on this trek or on any other trek. Diamox is a kind of medical prophylaxis agent which helps in the prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness. Above a height of 8,000 feet from mean sea level, an individual is prone to acute mountain sickness. As this trek exceeds the 8,000 mark, diamox can be taken. The currently advised dosing is 250 milligram which should begin 24 hours before making an ascent. You should talk to your doctor and your trek leader about it. After all, precaution is better than cure.


31. How big are the groups?

33. I can’t carry my bag can anyone carry it for me( Portage/Offloading of bags?

Yes, we do have offloading facilities available for all the trekkers. Though we advise you to carry your own rucksacks because that is one of the major features of trekking in the wild, but if due to any unavoidable circumstances, you can definitely opt for a mule to carry your stuff. Let us know in advance if you wish to avail this service as we need to make arrangements accordingly.


34. How many trekkers will be in one tent?

For Deoriatal Chandrashila or any other trek, generally, there is an accommodation of only two persons in a single tent. In some cases, we can accommodate three trekkers in a tent but that is very rare. We are also flexible if you want a tent mate of the same gender. You should always try to follow the norms of the tent mate etiquettes in order to have a warm and happy stay inside the tent. It is very important to create a healthy environment inside the tent. We can assure you that you may enter the tent as strangers but when you shall return back, you will go back to becoming good mates.


35. What is the level of fitness expected from the participants?

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek is a high altitude trek demanding 5 days of trekking. The level of this trek is easy to moderate, which demands physical fitness, stamina, and endurance. No prior trekking experience is required which means beginners are always welcomed. Also, please do basic exercise such as jogging, sit-ups and similar for 1-2 weeks prior the start of the trek. Moreover, we would suggest increasing your stamina by walking 4-5 kilometres daily for 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the trek. Keep yourself in a good frame of mind and be physically and mentally fit. 36. Do you think I should bring some medicines with me?

Deoriatal Chandrashila trek is at an elevation of around 13600 feet. So, generally you should always consult a doctor before going for this trek if you think you have breathing or any other problems. So make sure you consult an experienced doctor and tell him about all your past medical history and symptoms. Acknowledge him about the altitude you are planning to climb and the difficulty level of the trek. He will probably suggest you prophylaxis medication or else a prescription of acetazolamide. If you are allergic to acetazolamide, dexamethasone can be another option. All these drugs are tested and it is proven to reduce the incidence and severity of altitude sickness. You should also carry some basic medicines like Paracetamol, Crocin, Diamox, Avil, Combiflam, Norflox, Crepe Bandage, Digene etcetera.


37. Can we change the itinerary?

We take a lot of members alone with us for a trek and it is difficult to change the plan at the last moment except if trek leaders feel like it needs to be changed due to bad weather or any other natural calamity. Moreover, when you do a high altitude trek, it becomes very important to have a planned schedule. Otherwise, things may get worse because there are many factors that can affect a trek. So, to have a successful trek experience, it is important to trust the trek leaders and follow the planned schedule. 39. What is AMS? How to prevent it?

During Deoriatal Chandrashila or any other trek or any other mountain expedition, we ought to travel to high altitudes. As we ascend, due to change in elevation, there is a change in various other factors such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, radiation and oxygen saturation. The temperature and atmospheric pressure gradually fall down and the ultraviolet(UV) radiation increases with increase in altitude. Moreover, the humidity and oxygen level tends to lower down. These changes have an adverse effect on our body and sometimes our body fails to withstand it. Due to these changes, there arises a condition called altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS). The prevention tips are: You should always try to ascend a mountain as slowly as possible., It will be good if you plan a few extra days and spend it acclimatizing after every 3000 feet., Before starting to ascend, make sure you have a day of rest and a night of tight sleep., Drink plenty of water., Eat with proper guidelines.
