All about the Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek.

Nanda Devi, the second highest mountain in India, constitutes a pair of massive peaks, namely Nanda Devi East (7,816 m) and Nanda Devi West (7,434 m). The Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek affords unmatched views of the two peaks, and is as close as one can get to their beauty. Beginning from the beautiful settlement of Munsiyari, the trail snakes through sense bamboo forests, verdant alpine meadows, rustic villages, and some of the deepest gorges in the country! If luck favours, the trek may also reward you with an extremely rare glimpse of the Himalayan Musk Deer, and Snow Leopard. It also introduces trekkers to the culture of the Johari Tribe, which are native to Munsiyari.

    On this day, you drive back to Dehradun or Rishikesh according to your onward plans.

The level of this trek leans from moderate to slightly difficult, which naturally demands exceptional physical fitness, stamina and endurance. It is strongly advisable to have prior trekking experience of scaling at least 3,500 meters before you approach this trek, which means beginners should stay away. Also, proper acclimatization is key here.

Mid-June to October is ideal for the trek, since the snow will have cleared up significantly. Although, July may experience bouts of heavy rainfall, making the trails slippery and treacherous.

The temperature may dip to as low as -2 degrees in the night, making it imperative to carry enough warm layers.

By Rail

Kathgodam is the nearest Railway Station to Munsiyari (280 km).

By Road

Well connected to the neighboring towns of Rishikesh, Nainital, Kausani, and Haldwani, Munsiyari can be reached via taxis or state transport.

Rucksack, high ankle trekking shoes, one fleece jacket, one down feather / hollofil jacket, 3 pairs of quick dry T-shirts and trek pants, 5-6 pairs of socks, balaclava, a day pack, sunscreen SPF 50+, scarf, towel, lip balm, headlamp / torch, 2 water bottles of 1 litre, and personal medicines.
